Jon "Blazeman" Blais, the first person with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to complete an Ironman, has lost is battle with the disease.His life, his passion for triathlon, and his mission to end ALS are tributes to all of those fighting for thier lives. Bigun and I watched him in Kona- we were amazed at how one competitor was throwing a hissy fit over a couple of flat tires( sure stakes were high, but come on) when Jon "Blazeman" was competing against such incredible odds. Too bad the poor sport at kona didn't take the time to count his blessings the way Jon did.

I'm sorry to hear that he died although I think ALS is a nasty, nasty disease to live with. He is a SuperPower of Inspiration and always will be. May his fans roll on and on and on.
Sad but inevitable news. He inspired many of us and left his mark.
He was one brave soul. I won't forget him.

Very sad news.
One part of me thinks how surprising it is to die within 18 months of competing at Kona, but then, none of us, no matter how fit, has a guarantee for tomorrow. Carpe diem.
That's what gets me too - 18 months ago he completed an Ironman - that's just...too fast. He was and is an inspiration.
Thanks for posting this. I was just thinking about him last week and wondering how he was doing, not being able to find any pertinent info on his website. John Blais was truly an inspiration to all of us...
His story, race, and finish in Kona brought me to tears. To think of what he and his family have gone through tears at my heart. He continues to inspire.
His story was inspiring. The end was too soon, but his memory lives on.
He was special. I will never forget him. I will pray for his parents' healing. What an incredible few years for them as well as for Jon himself.
