46 for 46

In my household we keep the major holidays low key. Christmas is more about volunteering and giving of our time and less about presents and elaborate trappings. Easter is a day for quiet reflection and not of bunnies, chocolate eggs, and new clothes. Thanksgiving is for hosting friends and relations from near and far. All basic and decidely inconspicuous. Sure we have fun, but I see them as days to give, contemplate, and serve others.

That's the way it is for those holidays but it's not the same when it comes to birthdays. Around here it's partytime! A birthday is a reason to celebrate the first of the great gifts -- life. Everyone should be recognized on their special day. Go ahead 'BoomerNation, let your hair down, kick up your heels , and have a blast.

Today I turn another year older. There will be cake with candles, homemade cards, and singing. Presents will be unwrapped and a champagne bottle will be opened.

But .... not before I get my triathlon on. To celebrate my birthday I'm going to give myself the gift of sport. To mark my 46th year today I will run an unsupported tri of:

Swim 1 mile
Bike 40 miles
Run 5 miles

Add up the distances and you get 46 miles. One mile for each year.

Maaaaaaaaan, I love this sport!

Stay tuned...
